Teacher's
Home Page

7th Grade Science

MLK Middle School

Welcome,

This page has been designed as a template. The most useful feature may be the easily updated "dynamic text" blocks you will find below. Many of the links here would be useful to you and your students, and replacing them with your link URLs (actual web addresses) would be an easy task. The same applies to graphics, icons, and color schemes. This prototype was prepared for a teacher in Madera, California, using the MLK graphic and background from the school's web page.

Here is something that might really be helpful for a busy science teacher: the ability to use dynamic text to regularly update a home page.

Dynamic Text Box

This text is stored in a .txt file on the same server as the page you are viewing. It has been loaded dynamically by the browser.

This type of dynamic text is loaded from a .txt file that is separate from the Page's main HTML file. This removes any chance of accidentally changing the original Page when updating your "Message". Here is an example of how a dynamic note might be used:

Note from the Teacher

Welcome back from the holiday. We will be working from Chapter 7 in the text and continue to work on our group projects. Here is this week's assignment: Read Ch. 7 sections 1-3. Complete Questions 1-12 at the end of the chapter DUE ON MONDAY

Dynamic text is retrieved "on the fly" (as the page is loading) from another location, usually in another folder on the same server.

With just a little bit of added HTML, the note can include text that is "marked-up" with boldface, italics, and other highlights. Almost any HTML formatting can be applied. In this example, a dynamic text message displays new web links for students to visit:

Evaluating Web Pages

Using dynamic text, updating a web page can be as easy as changing a word processing document, and your home page can be updated without having to change the original web page file.

This is all similar to the way "blogging" works: dynamic text. In fact, you could register at blogger.com and the blogger text could be loaded dynamically into your web page. Down below - click here - is an example of how Yahoo! makes dynamic news links available.

Homework Assignments:

Any section can be modified to accept dynamic text, so the text here could list current assignments, or it could link to another page with an exercise to be completed. An example of this can be seen at

Notes from class:

Students can be shown "fill in the blank" note pages that can be copy/pasted for use in class. If the student is absent, the bulk of the text is given, but completion still requires some learning in order to fill the gaps. An example of this can be seen at
AZWALDO'S NOTES

Some Links:

Topical links for use in current study. These could be pulled dynamically from an external file such as "studentLinks.txt" on the server.

The Internet Public Library

Interactive lessons and quizzes are the next step. Here is an example of an assignment used with a biology class several years ago. And here is an example of an online practice quiz (students see their scores immediately).

Most of your ideas can find a way into these pages. (A little customization and this page can be loaded into your district's server to use as a home page...)
